As Guinea marks 68 Years of Independence, analysts urge focus on daily living standards

Guinea must shift its focus from celebrating historical sovereignty to delivering effective economic independence that directly improves the daily lives of its citizens, according to international diplomacy expert Dr Ousmane Souaré.

Speaking on the occasion of Guinea’s 68th Independence anniversary on October 2, the lecturer in diplomacy at Kofi Annan University of Guinea and former diplomat noted that while the nation’s founding fathers secured political self-determination in 1958, the central challenge for the current generation is ensuring that strong macroeconomic performance translates into tangible socio-economic development.

While major infrastructure and mining investments, including the massive Simandou iron ore development, are projected by the African Development Bank to propel Guinea’s economic growth beyond 9% in 2026 and 2027, Souaré emphasised that high growth figures alone do not guarantee human development.

He stressed that effective independence for ordinary Guineans means reliable access to electricity, quality healthcare, improved educational infrastructure, and meaningful youth employment within the national economy.
