Border Authority operating with only a quarter of the staff it needs
South Africa’s (SA) Border Management Authority says it is operating with only a quarter of the staff it needs, leaving more than 8 000 positions to be filled.
Its Commissioner, Dr Michael Masiapato, says the authority is also dismissing officials over misconduct linked to fraud and corruption, further affecting efforts to strengthen its workforce.
He was speaking at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg during a forum on tackling fraud and corruption within SA’s border management system.
The aim of the campaign was to raise awareness across the broader Border Management Authority ecosystem about the risks and consequences of fraud and corruption.
It sought to remind officials of their responsibility to uphold integrity, accountability and ethical conduct while carrying out their duties.
The campaign also served as a warning that corrupt conduct would not be tolerated and that officials found guilty of misconduct could face disciplinary action, including dismissal.
Briefing delegates Masiapato says the agency is losing staff through dismissals for corrupt conduct, worsening its staffing shortage.
