As the world marks World Teachers’ Day today, South Africa’s (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa is calling for education to play a greater role in tackling social problems, including gender-based violence and femicide.
Speaking at the country’s National Teaching Awards, Ramaphosa said schools should be safe spaces.
He added that education should help prevent violence before it occurs.
The awards recognise outstanding teachers across SA, while Ramaphosa also called for greater support for educators.
