AU Commission Chairperson congratulates Abiy Ahmed on parliamentary re-election

African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has extended congratulations to Ethiopia’s Prime Minister (PM) Abiy Ahmed on his re-election, expressing the continental body’s commitment to continued collaboration with the Horn of Africa nation.

Highlighting Ethiopia’s position as host to the AU headquarters, Chairperson Youssouf noted that the nation holds a central place in continental diplomacy, integration, and development initiatives.

The congratulations come against a backdrop of complex regional security challenges, including internal instability in the Tigray region. The AU Commission reiterated its growing concern over heightened geopolitical friction involving Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt.

In a formal statement, the AU urged leadership in Addis Ababa, Asmara, and Cairo to exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions or rhetoric that could exacerbate instability across the Horn of Africa.

Regional leaders have also welcomed the election outcome. Kenyan President William Ruto commended the result as a vote of confidence in Abiy’s administration, wishing him success in steering Ethiopia’s national transformation and development agenda.
