SA’s national electricity generation capacity has now officially outstripped domestic demand

South Africa’s (SA) Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says national electricity generation capacity has now officially outstripped domestic demand, driven by accelerated interventions from Eskom and private power producers.

Ramokgopa warned that the national grid is currently experiencing an excess capacity surplus exceeding 4 000 megawatts during daytime hours, resulting in financial loss as uncaptured energy is curtailed.

To absorb excess generation and stabilise supply, the government has announced plans to procure 4 600 megawatts of battery energy storage and 5 000 megawatts of gas-to-power generation under the first Section 34 determination of the Integrated Resource Plan 2025.

The procurement drive aims to store surplus daytime power, strengthen grid flexibility, and secure long-term energy availability across the country.
