Meteorologists and agricultural authorities in Zambia have warned that large parts of the country face reduced rainfall and lower crop yields during the 2026/2027 farming season due to the influence of the El Niño weather phenomenon.
The Ministry of Agriculture, alongside weather experts, has advised farmers across affected provinces to adopt early-maturing crop varieties and drought-tolerant seeds to safeguard household food security and mitigate potential dry spells.
To prevent widespread food shortages, regional agricultural extension officers are intensifying outreach programs to educate smallholder farmers on conservation agriculture and water-harvesting techniques ahead of the planting window.
