South Africa’s (SA) Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Migration is set to brief the media this Sunday regarding the recent Constitutional Court judgment concerning the processing of asylum seekers across the country.
The Apex Court ruled that asylum seekers must be assisted at Department of Home Affairs facilities regardless of their legal status in SA. However, while the department initially moved to implement the directive, the decision sparked severe public backlash and violent protests, particularly across Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.
Following the widespread unrest, the Department of Home Affairs suspended the directive. The Ministerial briefing is expected to address government’s policy response to the court ruling, public safety concerns, and the future management of asylum intake systems.
