South African jurist Navi Pillay is calling for stronger protection of international justice, urging the United States (US) to return to defending human rights.
Speaking at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague, she criticised US sanctions against the institution.
Her remarks come amid international celebrations over her Nobel Peace Prize, alongside criticism of the award from Israel and the US.
Pillay received a rapturous welcome at the headquarters of the ICC in the Hague.
ICC indicted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was among the first to criticise the decision after a United Nations Independent Inquiry earlier led by Pillay, determined in September 2025 that genocide was taking place in Gaza, while US President Donald Trump in a lengthy tirade on social media and in person, slammed the Nobel Committee for yet again overlooking him.
