SA book spot in third round of Olympic Qualifiers

South Africa’s (SA) national women’s football team, Banyana Banyana, secured a 3–0 victory over Madagascar at the Free State Stadium on Tuesday to advance to the third round of the Confederation of African Football 2028 Los Angeles (LA) Olympic Games qualifiers.

The dominant second-leg win completes a commanding 7–0 aggregate triumph for the South Africans, following their 4–0 victory in the opening leg.

Speaking after the match, Banyana Banyana head coach Dr Desiree Ellis praised her team’s overall performance while noting that they could have capitalized even further on their dominant play. According to Ellis, the team started the encounter somewhat slowly before finding their rhythm, playing deep and creating numerous goal-scoring opportunities.

“I think we started slowly and we needed to get knocks on the ball,” Ellis said. “We were playing deep, and we could have scored five or six goals. Overall, I am very happy with the performance and we will take that.”

The Reigning African champions now move on to the third round of the continental qualification campaign as they step up their bid to secure a place at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
