Across Africa, financial markets are making steady progress in deepening liquidity and broadening investment opportunities, with 21 of 29 surveyed nations recording higher scores in the newly released 2026 Absa Africa Financial Markets Index.
Published in partnership with the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum (OMFIF) and supported by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the annual benchmark evaluates regional market performance amid challenging global economic conditions. The report shows that easing inflation, stronger foreign exchange reserves, and targeted regulatory reforms have helped African economies strengthen their financial systems.
South Africa retained top position overall, followed by Mauritius and Namibia. Meanwhile, Ghana surged four places to sixth following its ongoing economic recovery and falling inflation, while Nigeria and Botswana placed in the top eight. Beyond traditional capital markets, African nations continue to lead in financial innovation, with 18 economies now offering climate-aligned or Islamic finance products, including green bonds and local currency instruments.
Addressing the report’s release, Absa Group Chief Executive Kenny Fihla highlighted that while global headwinds and climate shocks persist, African nations must continue building strong domestic market fundamentals to attract long-term capital and finance critical infrastructure development.
