Speaking on the latest political developments in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Reverend Thomas Kamwend Mukala, Executive Secretary of the ruling Union Sacrée de la Nation for Southern Africa, has described former President Joseph Kabila’s new alliance as a major threat to stability. According to Mukala, uniting political figures with armed rebel movements undermines ongoing regional diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in eastern DRC and risks further escalating violence across the region.
The sharp rebuke follows the formal launch of the Front for the Refounding of the Nation (FRN), a new political-military coalition headed by Kabila. The platform brings together Kabila and several prominent leaders from the AFC/M23 rebel movement in an effort to unite opposition forces against President Félix Tshisekedi’s government.
The formation of the FRN adds weight to long-standing accusations from Kinshasa linking Kabila to active insurgent groups in the east.
Kabila has repeatedly rejected those claims, pointing to his prior conviction and death sentence for high treason as evidence of a politically motivated campaign against him.
