Japan funds relief operations in northern Mozambique

The Government of Japan has committed $1.8 million in emergency aid to assist communities affected by ongoing conflict and insurgent violence in Mozambique’s northern province of Cabo Delgado.

The funding channelled through the World Food Programme (WFP) aims to provide life-saving food assistance to nearly 94 000 internally displaced persons and vulnerable host families. Under the initiative, the aid package will focus on providing locally procured emergency food supplies, including rice, while supporting local agricultural markets and improving nutrition security for families forced from their homes by regional instability.

Speaking on the package, Japanese Ambassador to Mozambique Keiji Hamada noted that the aid comes as rising climate shocks and localised food insecurity compound the displacement crisis in the north. Since 2019, Japan has provided over $21 million in total humanitarian assistance to WFP operations in Mozambique.
