A fiery debate has erupted across the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) over proposals to restrict former President Joseph Kabila from appearing on national media platforms.
The move comes as political tensions rise between the government in Kinshasa and Kabila’s political allies, following recent state actions against parties linked to the former leader.
Journalist Magloire Kakule, speaking from Bunia in Ituri province, noted that the proposal has sharply divided political analysts, legal scholars, and press freedom advocates. Critics warn that barring a prominent political figure from the airwaves creates a risky precedent for free speech and democratic dialogue. On the other hand, proponents maintain that limiting public airtime is essential to protect national security during a fragile period.
The ongoing argument highlights the growing pressure on news outlets and media independence as journalists try to cover an increasingly polarized political climate in the DRC.
