The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres has urged Sudan and South Sudan to prevent further attacks in the disputed Abyei region after drone strikes killed dozens of civilians.

The strikes hit the busy Amiet Market and nearby Todach area on Monday, injuring many people and setting several structures ablaze.

Guterres on Wednesday strongly condemned the attacks and called for civilians and civilian infrastructure to be protected. “I express my deepest and heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wish a swift recovery to the injured,” Guterres said.

The UN Interim Security Force for Abyei deployed medical personnel, firefighting equipment and rapid-response units following the strikes.

Peacekeepers provided emergency medical treatment, supported the evacuation of casualties and worked to prevent fires from spreading.

The attacks were among the latest developments linked to the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023.

Abyei lies along the border between Sudan and South Sudan and remains disputed by both countries. The region is meant to retain demilitarised status under existing agreements.

Guterres reminded parties to the conflict that international humanitarian law prohibited attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure. “All parties to the armed conflict must comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law, including to respect and protect civilians at all times,” Guterres said.

Guterres also called for accountability for the strikes and urged authorities in Sudan and South Sudan to use available channels to prevent further violence.

Both governments should “take all steps possible to help prevent further attacks and uphold Abyei’s demilitarised status”, Guterres said.
