Tanzania has officially begun implementing its Universal Health Insurance scheme, a major policy initiative aimed at expanding healthcare coverage and ensuring essential medical services reach low-income households across the country.
The rollout marks a significant shift in East Africa’s health policy landscape, designed to ease out-of-pocket medical expenses and bridge long-standing disparities in healthcare access between rural and urban populations.
Under the framework, the government is focusing on creating sustainable financing mechanisms to subsidize coverage for vulnerable groups while integrating public and private healthcare providers into a unified system.
