South Africa’s (SA) authorities have seized approximately 250kg of cocaine valued at nearly $12 million at OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng.

The consignment was discovered in luggage from a flight originating in São Paulo, Brazil.

A multidisciplinary team comprising the SA Police Service, South African Revenue Service and Border Management Authority found five luggage bags containing the cocaine.

The drugs were divided into 216 packages concealed inside the suitcases.

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola commended the authorities involved in the operation.

Masemola said the seizure demonstrated the value of cooperation among agencies responsible for policing, customs administration and border control. “The significant seizure is a testament to the effectiveness of coordinated law-enforcement efforts and the commitment of frontline officers to disrupting drug-trafficking networks that seek to use SA’s ports of entry to move illicit substances,” Masemola said.

The operation formed part of continuing efforts to prevent international drug-trafficking networks from using SA’s ports of entry to transport illicit substances.

Masemola praised the frontline officers involved in identifying and intercepting the consignment.
