SADC approves Anti-Corruption readiness for SA and Lesotho

South Africa (SA) and Lesotho have successfully demonstrated their institutional capacity to implement the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Anti-Corruption Effort Index (SACEI), following national readiness assessments carried out by the SADC Secretariat.

According to the SADC Secretariat, assessments were conducted in collaboration with SA’s Special Investigating Unit (SIU) between October 19 and 20, 2026, and with Lesotho’s Directorate on Corruption and Economic Offences from October 22 to 23, 2026. Both nations have since established implementation roadmaps outlining key actions, including stakeholder engagement and data validation, with final reports scheduled for submission to the SADC Anti-Corruption Committee and the Ministerial Committee of the Organ in 2027.

The SACEI is an evidence-based regional tool designed to help member states evaluate their domestic anti-corruption frameworks, identify areas requiring institutional strengthening, and monitor compliance with regional commitments. The initiative aligns directly with the SADC Protocol Against Corruption and the regional strategic action plan, reinforcing good governance and accountability as essential pillars for sustainable development and security across Southern Africa.
