Tensions have flared in Malawi’s political landscape as the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) trade accusations following an attack on former President Dr Lazarus Chakwera’s convoy in Blantyre.
The incident occurred on Sunday when unidentified individuals stoned vehicles belonging to Chakwera and several senior party officials. The delegation was returning from a commemorative church service marking the 150th anniversary of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian Blantyre Synod.
In a report detailing the confrontation and its political aftermath, Malawian correspondent Kondwani Nyamasauka provided an account of the growing rift between the rival political camps.
According to Nyamasauka, both parties have launched sharp verbal attacks against each other, with MCP officials condemning the ambush as a targeted political provocation, while the DPP has rejected any involvement and accused its rivals of orchestrating narrative maneuvers to score political points ahead of upcoming electoral engagements.
