SA honors anti-apartheid Icon Oliver Tambo at annual ceremony

South Africans (SA) can render no greater tribute to anti-apartheid icon Oliver Reginald Tambo than to uphold and live by the core values he embodied throughout his life, Deputy President Paul Mashatile declared today.

Speaking at the annual OR Tambo wreath-laying ceremony in Wattville, east of Johannesburg, Mashatile commemorated the birthday of the late African National Congress (ANC) leader, who was born on October 27, 1917.

Addressing attendees at the gravesite, Mashatile pointed out that Tambo’s legacy remains a guiding compass for the nation’s democratic journey, rooted in an unyielding commitment to justice, equality, and human dignity.

“The greatest tribute we can pay to OR Tambo is not merely found in our words or annual commemorations, but in how we conduct ourselves daily in service of our people,” Mashatile said. “He stood firmly for fairness, selflessness, and the absolute defense of human dignity, principles that must continue to define our society today.”

The ceremony in Ekurhuleni forms part of the annual national commemorations honoring Tambo, who led the liberation movement in exile for over three decades and played a pivotal role in laying the foundation for SA’s constitutional democracy.
