A shouting match between the United States (SA) and Cuba has disrupted proceedings at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, as tensions over Washington’s decades-long embargo on the island spilled onto the floor of the world body.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez approached the front of the chamber and accused US Ambassador Mike Waltz of lying, as Waltz attacked the Cuban government.
The American envoy told Rodríguez to “back up”, while the President of the General Assembly struggled to restore order.
The confrontation came as member states debated the annual Cuban resolution calling for an end to the decades-long US embargo, amid growing pressure on Havana from the Trump administration.
Tensions between Havana and Washington have been building ahead of the annual UN General Assembly debate and vote on ending the US embargo on Cuba.
