Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his main challenger, Gadi Eisenkot, are both claiming political momentum after Tuesday’s election.
But exit polls suggest neither has secured a clear path to a parliamentary majority. Projections put the rival blocs neck and neck, with neither reaching the 61 seats needed to govern.
Netanyahu called for the formation of “a strong, right-wing national government,” while Eisenkot said the public had voted against Netanyahu remaining Prime Minister and called on him to retire from politics.
Neither of them claimed victory.
Turnout reached 77.7%, the highest in more than two decades.
Final results are expected later this week, with coalition talks likely to follow.
