The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa(SA) says it has put measures in place to improve operations on the second day of special voting this Tuesday.
The IEC has apologised for delays in the opening of some voting stations, which it says were caused by the late delivery of ballot papers on Monday.
In Limpopo province voting did not take place at 12 stations, including one at Ga-Chokoe outside Mokopane in the Waterberg District.
Provincial IEC Commissioner Nkaro Mateta says voter intimidation was reported at Ga-Chokoe during the last voter registration period, resulting in some residents not registering or applying for special votes.
“The majority of these places are in Ga-Chokoe, where we are very concerned because, even during the registration weekend, some voters were threatened, and there was some kind of intimidation, where for the two days, no one showed up to check their details, register or re-register. We are hopeful that perhaps on election day, which is on Wednesday, this will be the last opportunity for them to decide who will lead their areas,” says Mateta.
