The United States (US) has announced plans to terminate Rwanda’s eligibility for the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), effective January 1, 2027.
US accuses Rwanda of violating AGOA’s eligibility requirements, citing concerns over trade and investment barriers, the rule of law, political pluralism and human rights.
It has also raised concerns about Rwanda’s role in the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This is not the first time Rwanda has faced AGOA restrictions.
In 2018, the US suspended duty-free access for Rwandan apparel exports after Kigali restricted imported second-hand clothing.
