Gabon Democratic Party accuses President Nguema of political meddling

Tensions between Gabon’s transition government and the country’s former ruling party have flared up following strong accusations of political interference levelled against President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.

The secretariat-general of the Democratic Party of Gabon (PDG) has publicly accused the transitional President of directly meddling in an ongoing internal succession battle for control of the party.

The friction escalated shortly after a high-profile meeting on 30 October at the Presidential Palace, where PDG President Blaise Louembé was received in audience by Nguema. During the meeting, Louembé presented his party’s grievances to the head of state while reaffirming the PDG’s commitment to supporting Nguema’s national vision for Gabon’s transition.

The audience, however, triggered a fierce internal backlash within the former ruling party’s executive body. Members of the PDG secretariat-general contend that the executive branch’s involvement destabilises internal party processes and threatens political neutrality during the transitional period.

Analysing the unfolding political rift, Ferdinand Demba, Director of Publication at INSIDE NEWS241, noted that the dispute reflects broader friction between Gabon’s established political elite and the transitional military leadership as the country navigates its political restructuring.
