The IEC says several videos depicting electoral officers transporting special votes ballots have been shared online without context.

The Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa (SA) says it has identified growing attempts to damage the integrity of the electoral process through the posting of misleading videos on social media platforms.

The IEC says several videos depicting electoral officers transporting special votes ballots have been shared online without context, creating false narratives about the handling of election materials.

Briefing the media in Midrand, north of Johanneburg, IEC Chief Executive Officer Sy Mamabolo cautioned against the spread of misinformation.

“Unsubstantiated election fraud pronouncements by some political parties has led to supporters posting videos of presiding officers and staff transferring special votes ballot after home visits from the carrying boxes and bags into the main ballot box at the voting station. The videos are shared without context, alongside claims that something untoward was underway. The IEC appeals to political parties to avoid making inflammatory remarks, which represent the standard operating procedures regarding the voting process.”
