The South Africa’s (SA) Electoral Commission (IEC) Chief Officer, Sy Mamabolo, appeals to the general public to exercise patience as the 2026 Local Government Elections results are slowly coming in.
Mamabolo says the IEC will continue to cautiously audit votes to ascertain if double voting occurred.
Vote counting began immediately after polls closed last night, with several operational hurdles and localised disruptions affecting the pace of voting and the initial rollout of data.
“The delay is threefold, you could say. One is the length of the ballot. Remember that you’ve got to count and return a result for every party. Even zero is a number. You’ve got to put that number in there.”
