The Guinean League for Human Rights has welcomed the release of several military officers who had been detained for over a year in Guinea-Bissau following their alleged involvement in an attempted coup d’état.
While describing the releases as a positive step towards restoring legal norms, the rights organisation stressed that several other detainees remain unlawfully held without formal charges or judicial proceedings, calling for their immediate release or prompt trial.
Analysing the broader implications for human rights and the rule of law, legal expert and political analyst Dr Fransual Dias noted that while the release of the officers signals a willingness to ease political friction, the persistence of arbitrary detentions continues to undermine public confidence in the country’s judicial independence.
Dias emphasised that restoring democratic normality in Guinea-Bissau requires complete adherence to due process, full transparency regarding all remaining political and military detainees, and institutional guarantees to prevent the prolonged detention of citizens without trial.
