University of Johannesburg (UJ) in South Africa (SA) hosted a conference on Thursday examining the role of young people and the media in tackling climate change.
The gathering brought together academics, students, journalists, businesses and civil society groups to discuss how radio, social media and other platforms can help young people shape climate conversations and influence action across Southern Africa.
The conference was organised by the university’s Department of Communication and Media and its Centre for Data and Digital Communications. Thuto Ngobeni has the report.
The conference is centred on how Southern African youth use media, culture, and storytelling to shape climate narratives, challenge dominant discourses, and advance climate justice.
It positions youth as active knowledge producers rather than passive stakeholders.
The UJ’s Professor Admire Mare says the conference was based on the fact that young people are never included in the discussions around climate change.
