An overwhelming majority of South African (SA) voters viewed this week’s local government elections as both free and fair, according to an exit poll study released by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC).
The findings were presented at the Electoral Commission’s National Results Operations Centre in Midrand as vote counting and seat allocations continue, with official final results set for announcement on Sunday.
According to Dr Benjamin Roberts, Research Director at the HSRC, electoral integrity remains exceptionally strong in the eyes of the public. Roberts highlighted that 90% of voters surveyed regarded the procedures as free, while 91% judged them to be fair. Furthermore, 95% expressed satisfaction with the operational efficiency of the Electoral Commission, with 91% of respondents reporting queue waiting times under 30 minutes.
