Catastrophic crisis unfolds in Sudan’s Al Fasher: ICRC

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has described conditions in Sudan’s Al Fasher as “catastrophic”, warning that more than 260 000 people remain trapped as fighting intensifies around the city.

According to the ICRC, residents are surviving on a single meal a day while medical workers continue treating the wounded under fire. Access to food, water and essential healthcare has become increasingly limited as clashes escalate.

The humanitarian agency has urged all sides in the conflict to respect international humanitarian law and to allow aid to reach civilians in urgent need.

“This is a humanitarian catastrophe in every sense,” said Mateo Jaramillo, the ICRC’s Regional Spokesperson for Africa. “People in Al Fasher are facing unimaginable suffering. Immediate action is needed to prevent further loss of life.”

Al Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, has been at the centre of fierce fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The city has been under siege for months, leaving civilians trapped and aid agencies warning of a looming famine.
