The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has clarified calculation errors in its earlier multi-year price determination for power utility Eskom, resulting in higher electricity tariffs than initially announced for 2026 and 2027.

The revised increases follow an out-of-court settlement between NERSA and Eskom. The steeper hikes 5% in 2026 and 6% in 2027, will allow Eskom to recover an additional $3.05 billion over the next two financial years.

Rhulani Mathebula, Executive Manager for Electricity at NERSA, explained the adjustments: “We had to go back to our numbers and identify what we missed when we announced the price increases for 2026 and 2027. Prices for the distribution and transmission businesses were calculated correctly, but certain figures for generation were omitted. This led to a 3.26% impact for 2026 and 2.6% for 2027 on consumers.”
