South African (SA) farmers are expected to harvest 23% more maize in the 2024/2025 season compared with the previous one, the government’s Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) said on Wednesday

The CEC’s seventh summer crop forecast estimated the 2025 maize harvest at 15.802 million metric tons, up from 12.85 million metric tons harvested the season before. The previous estimate, on July 29, had put the 2025 maize harvest at 15.031 million metric tons.

The harvest is expected to consist of 8.081 million tons of white maize, for human consumption, and 7.721 million tons of yellow maize, used mainly in animal feed.
