South Africa’s (SA) Johannesburg Pride returns on October 25 running from midday to midnight with a focus on inclusivity, safety, and celebrating African queer identity.
This year’s theme, Purely Queerly African, aims to challenge misconceptions that queerness is un-African.
Kaye Aly, Executive Director of Johannesburg Pride, explained that the theme highlights the importance of embracing African heritage while celebrating queer identity. She said it is about resilience, joy, authenticity, and proudly African.
Attendees have praised Johannesburg Pride as a safe space. One participant said it was the only event where they felt free from harassment and fully comfortable being themselves. Aly emphasised that the event prioritises safety for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer or Questioning (LGBTQ) individuals including trans, non-binary, lesbian, and bisexual youth along with their allies.
Johannesburg Pride also plays a continental role through its connection with Pride of Africa, a platform promoting solidarity across the continent. Aly said the event aims to give a voice to LGBTQ plus communities in countries where laws are restrictive. She cited the 2022 support for Uganda as an example when Pride offered visibility for a community unable to march themselves.
Beyond the march, the event leverages media, social platforms, and partnerships with artists to raise awareness and visibility. Aly noted the role of younger generations in shaping acceptance. She said Gen Z has a natural understanding of integration, they judge less, embrace people as they are, and focus on shared humanity.
The 2025 Johannesburg Pride promises a mix of celebration and advocacy, and entry is free to ensure it is accessible for all. Aly encouraged attendees to join the march in rainbow colours, honouring African queer lives while fostering community and solidarity.
