In a remarkable fusion of tradition and innovation, discarded cow horns in Kampala are being turned into stylish eyeglass frames, creating a fresh way to make vision care more affordable and accessible.
What was once seen as waste is now the focus of a small but growing local industry. Artisans carefully craft the natural curves of cow horns into sleek, durable frames, giving new life to an overlooked material while showcasing Uganda’s creativity and commitment to sustainability.
One of the designers behind the initiative explained that the goal was to produce eyewear that is both functional and fashionable while addressing a real need. Using cow horns allows them to make high-quality frames at a fraction of the cost of imported glasses.
The frames have gained attention for their unique designs, which blend modern style with a distinctly Ugandan touch. Beyond aesthetics, the project aims to improve access to vision care, particularly for communities where conventional eyewear can be expensive or hard to obtain.
Repurposing cow horns also reduces waste and encourages environmentally friendly practices in both fashion and healthcare. Each frame represents resourcefulness, craftsmanship, and cultural pride.
