When it comes to major life decisions, making sure your partner is actually single used to rely on trust, mutual friends, or perhaps a little light social media sleuthing. Now, for anyone planning a wedding or taking a serious step in their relationship, there is a new digital tool to help bring total clarity to legal marital status.

Ghana has introduced a digital platform that enables the public to search and verify official marriage and divorce records, introducing technology into the country’s personal law and wedding planning sectors.

The platform, called Marrify, was launched in Accra by developer Marry Right Ghana Limited in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection. The system acts as a searchable database covering civil, customary, and Islamic marriages, drawing verified records directly from the Registrar-General’s Department, local courts, municipal assemblies, and the official Ghana Gazette. Users can query the system using individual names, spouse names, certificate numbers, or venue locations.

In addition to personal marital histories, the application provides a public directory of authorised marriage officers, licensed venues, and registered Imams qualified to officiate legal ceremonies. Speaking at the launch event, Gender Minister Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey stated that the tool aims to improve legal compliance and administrative transparency for citizens before committing financial and personal resources to marriages.

The database also indexes formal divorce decrees issued by courts, linking relevant judgments to existing marriage records where applicable. Platform administrators noted that data entry remains ongoing, advising users that an empty search result does not serve as legal proof that an individual has never been married.
