The Anglo American Foundation has announced the launch of the Dr John Kani Performing Arts Academy

The Anglo American Foundation has announced the launch of the Dr John Kani Performing Arts Academy, a landmark initiative aimed at developing South Africa’s (SA) next generation of storytellers, actors, directors, and scriptwriters.

The academy, based at the historic 44 Main in Johannesburg, will serve as a creative hub for artistic excellence, mentorship, and community revitalisation. It marks a major investment in the country’s cultural and creative economy.

Spearheaded by the legendary Kani, together with acclaimed industry figures Dr Jerry Mofokeng and Professor Zakes Mda, the academy seeks to empower young artists to tell authentic SA stories while building sustainable careers in the performing arts.

The official launch event is set to bring together key figures from the arts, film, and education sectors to celebrate what many see as a defining moment in SA’s cultural landscape.

According to the Anglo American Foundation, the academy underscores its commitment to youth empowerment and social investment, reflecting the Foundation’s belief that the arts remain central to the country’s social and economic transformation.
