The Call, a daring new musical, is set to hit the stage

If you love theatre, music, and a dash of bold, unapologetic creativity, then South Africa (SA) is about to get a treat. The Call, a daring new musical, is set to hit the stage, blending music, storytelling and visual arts into a feast for the senses.

Inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest, this production flips the classic tale on its head, weaving in SA history and queer experiences. Think magic, music, and powerful storytelling, all wrapped up in a celebration of identity, joy, and survival.

Playwright and librettist Mkhululi Zandile Mabija, the creative mind behind the show, describes it as a “rediscovery” of Shakespeare’s most African play. But don’t expect a stuffy, lecture-like performance. “We’re having fun with it,” Mabija says. “Yes, it tackles history, politics and identity, but it’s all done in a way that’s playful, vibrant and full of life.”

As a librettist, Mabija works where music meets words, creating narratives that sing, literally. From operas to musicals, he crafts experiences that stick with you, long after the curtain falls. And with The Call, audiences can expect an immersive, multi-sensory journey: music, rhythm, dance, visual art, all the things that make African theatre so electric.

Whether you’re a theatre regular or just looking for something new and exciting, The Call promises to be an unforgettable experience. It’s a bold, queer, African production that invites you to laugh, think, feel, and most importantly, enjoy every moment.
