Tanzanian Fashion Designer and stylist Irada Mahadi believes dressing modestly

Modesty in fashion is no longer just about covering up. It has become a statement of confidence, sophistication and individuality.

Tanzanian Fashion Designer and stylist Irada Mahadi believes dressing modestly is about expressing oneself with quiet power and self-assurance.

Mahadi, the Chief Executive Officer of Drada Company and founder of Irada Style, a modest fashion brand, says the trend represents a growing movement in contemporary African fashion.

“Dressing modestly is about covering major parts of your body without revealing too much skin,” she explained. “But it’s also about doing that with style and grace, staying elegant and true to yourself.”

She added that many people already dress modestly without realising it, especially through long dresses, tailored trousers and layered outfits that are now part of mainstream fashion.

Mahadi says modest fashion is often misunderstood. “It has nothing to do with religion or tradition alone. It’s simply a choice for anyone who wants to be stylish without feeling exposed.”

When speaking about trends, Mahadi highlighted the balance between minimalism and maximalism in modest dressing. Minimalists, she said, prefer a clean and simple approach, while maximalists bring their looks to life through colour, texture and accessories. “Both are modest. They just express the style in different ways,” she said.

The designer also dismissed the idea that modest fashion is only for people who can afford luxury clothing. “You do not need an expensive wardrobe to look stylish,” she said. “Fashion is about creativity. You can restyle what you already have. A single blazer can create several looks if you know how to put it together.”

Mahadi encouraged people to use social media for ideas rather than imitation. “Take inspiration from the runways, but work with what is in your wardrobe,” she advised.

Her brand, Irada Style, has gained strong recognition online for combining African influences with global modest fashion trends. Through her platforms, Mahadi offers one-on-one consultations to help clients build confidence and find their personal style.

“Modesty is not a restriction,” she said. “It is about redefining elegance and embracing it on your own terms.”
