One of Netflix’s latest breakout drama series, The Polygamist, has ignited a massive global conversation surrounding marriage, betrayal, revenge, and the contentious practice of polygamy.
The 22-episode Zulu-language, South African (SA) production series follows the complex and tangled love life of wealthy Johannesburg businessman, Jonasi Gomora. The show opens dramatically at the tycoon’s funeral, where his widow Joyce, wearing a striking white outfit, discovers she is not his only partner. Standing among the mourners are two other wives and a mistress, all clad in black, launching a plot that spirals back over five years to unravel their toxic family dynamics.
Since its release this month, the production has dominated international streaming charts and captured widespread attention across the continent. In Nairobi, Kenya, several minibus taxis have already been redecorated with the face of the protagonist, Jonasi.
The cultural phenomenon has also caught the eye of global entertainment icons, with Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido tweeting his fascination with the character, alongside commentary from various Hollywood celebrities.
