Tchiloli, the traditional theatre of São Tomé and Príncipe, has been officially recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

Tchiloli, the traditional theatre of São Tomé and Príncipe, has been officially recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The announcement came during the 20th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in New Delhi, India.

Emir Boa Morte, Director-General of Culture in São Tomé and Príncipe, described the recognition as a “moment of pride for our nation and a testament to the enduring power of Tchiloli in our culture.” He added that the designation opens new opportunities for preserving the art form while also sharing it with audiences beyond the islands.

“Tchiloli is more than a performance; it is a reflection of our history, our values, and the stories that have shaped generations,” Boa Morte said. “UNESCO’s recognition will help us safeguard this heritage for the future, support our artists, and inspire young people to engage with our traditions.”

Cultural experts say the UNESCO listing can attract international attention, promote cultural tourism, and provide resources to ensure that Tchiloli continues to thrive amid modern challenges.
