The festive season is in full swing, and for many South Africans, the constant socialising, disrupted routines, and financial pressures are already taking a toll.
Mental health experts warn that without care, the season could leave people feeling drained even before the new year begins.
Kasey Chambers, Operations Director at the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), encourages taking proactive steps to maintain balance. “Prioritise self-care, set boundaries, and seek support where needed,” she says. “These actions can help you enjoy the festivities without burning out and enter the new year with better emotional wellbeing.”
A recent SADAG survey shows the scale of the challenge; over 73% of respondents are worried about making ends meet in January, and 58% already report feeling exhausted. “This isn’t just holiday tiredness; it’s emotional and mental fatigue,” Chambers explains.
Experts suggest practical ways to stay refreshed during the season: schedule quiet moments, maintain healthy routines where possible, enjoy hobbies that bring joy, and reach out for support when overwhelmed. With these strategies, South Africans can celebrate the holidays while protecting their mental health.
