South Africans are feeling optimistic about travel in 2026

South Africans are feeling optimistic about travel in 2026, with many planning more holidays than ever before, according to new research by Marriott Bonvoy.

Nearly seven in ten travellers say they intend to take the same number or more trips next year, with many aiming for at least six holidays. Dorcas Dlamini Mbele, Senior Director for Commercial Sub-Saharan Africa at Marriott International, says travellers are looking for meaningful experiences, spending quality time with family and creating lasting memories.

Technology is playing a big role, with almost half of South Africans now using artificial intelligence to plan their trips, from picking destinations to booking activities, making the process smoother and more efficient.

Food remains a highlight, too. Chef Melusi Twala of Marriott Hotels International says South Africans love exploring flavours, from classic European dishes like pasta and beef Wellington to bold Asian cuisines packed with spices and marinades.

The research paints a picture of travellers ready to combine family, adventure, luxury, and technology for a memorable 2026.
