Coffee has evolved from a simple drink into a full-blown experience. From expertly pulled espresso shots to barista artistry and sensory storytelling, South Africans (SA) are expecting more from every coffee moment, and the hospitality sector is rising to the challenge.
Hostex 2026, taking place at the Sandton Convention Centre from March 8 to 10, will showcase this shift. The event brings together Africa’s hospitality leaders, coffee roasters, and innovators for tastings, workshops, and discussions on sustainability and sourcing.
Ian Evans, publisher of Coffee Mag and a Hostex ambassador, explains that specialty coffee is about more than flavour.
“Specialty coffee isn’t just about the taste. It’s the story, the environment, the people serving it,” Evans says. “Baristas, café culture, and sustainable practices all add to the experience.”
SA consumers, exposed to global trends through travel and media, expect coffee experiences as polished as those in New York, Paris, or Melbourne. Baristas play a central role, not only in crafting the drink but in creating a welcoming atmosphere.
Current trends focus on provenance and transparency. Coffee lovers want to know where the beans come from, how they were grown, and the story behind each cup.
With its vibrant community and skilled baristas, SA is positioning itself at the forefront of specialty coffee. Hostex 2026 will celebrate that evolution and connect local talent with global coffee trends.
