Managing body acne means figuring out what’s causing yours

Summer is here and while the sunshine, sleeveless tops and beach days are a mood, they can be tricky if you’re prone to body acne. Warmer weather brings more sweat, tighter clothing and, unfortunately, breakouts in places we’d rather not talk about.

“Adult acne is no longer just a teenage problem,” says Dr Judey Pretorius. “Men and women in their 20s, 30s, 40s and beyond are seeing more regular breakouts. And it’s not just the face that’s affected. Body acne, or ‘bacne,’ often shows up on the back, chest and buttocks, affecting teens and adults alike.”

There are lots of reasons body acne shows up. Friction and pressure from tight gym gear, sweaty clothing or workout equipment can clog pores and cause breakouts. Some products we use, like shampoos, conditioners and body washes, can also trigger acne if they run down the back and aren’t rinsed off properly. Hormones play a big part too, with changes during puberty, pregnancy or menopause boosting oil production and breakouts. Even fungal infections can cause clusters of red, itchy bumps that sometimes turn into whiteheads. Stress, diet, hygiene and genetics all play a role as well.

Managing body acne means figuring out what’s causing yours. Sometimes it’s obvious, like daily workouts, and other times you might need to chat with a medical professional to get the right treatment plan.

“Small changes can make a big difference,” Pretorius adds. “Shower soon after exercising, use gentle salicylic acid cleansers, wash your clothes and bedding often, and choose non-comedogenic products to keep breakouts under control. Hypochlorous acid sprays are also fantastic for soothing and disinfecting hard-to-reach areas like the back.”

Body acne is common but doesn’t have to ruin your summer vibes. With a few smart habits and some patience, you can enjoy clearer, healthier skin while soaking up the sun.
