The Liberia Basketball Association (LBA) is facing legal pressure from hotel operators and an airline ticketing company over unpaid debts exceeding $100 000.
Secretary General Calvin Diggs told The Liberian Investigator that the association owes four hotels, Royal Grand Hotel, Cape Hotel, Mama Point Hotel, and King’s Hotel, as well as an airline ticketing firm for services used during international tournaments earlier this year.
Diggs explained that the LBA submitted a $60 000 budget request to the Ministry of Youth and Sports over two months ago, ahead of travel to the AfroBasket competition in Rwanda. The request was forwarded to Finance Minister Augustine Ngafuan, but no action has been taken so far.
“Players and officials who represented Liberia in tournaments both at home and in Rwanda have not received their per diem due to this financial shortfall,” Diggs said.
He urged the government to release the allocated funds promptly to settle the association’s debts and prevent further reputational damage.
