The $20.56 million project was financed by the Bank through its concessional arm, the African Development Fund. The commissioning ceremony, held in Barra and presided over by President Adama Barrow, brought together senior government officials, development partners and community representatives. AfDB President, Dr Sidi Ould Tah, was represented by Lamin G. Barrow, Director General for West Africa.

The newly commissioned vessel, known as the Barra Ferry, marks a major milestone in modernising river transport in The Gambia. Built using state‑of‑the‑art hybrid green technology, the ferry can carry up to 1 000 passengers and more than 50 vehicles. Its cleaner propulsion system, energy‑efficient design and enhanced safety features are expected to reduce emissions, lower operating costs and improve reliability.

The River Gambia stretches about 360 kilometres inland and divides the country into North and South Banks, making ferry services essential to daily travel and commerce. For years, ferry operations have struggled to keep up with growing passenger and vehicular demand. The new ferry is expected to ease congestion, reduce travel delays and significantly improve safety for thousands of commuters.

Speaking at the ceremony, Barrow highlighted the importance of efficient transport infrastructure for national development. “The socioeconomic wellbeing of The Gambia is closely linked to the efficiency of our major trade gateways, including seaports, ferry services and airports,” he said. He added that modern and professionally managed ferry services are critical to sustained economic growth and competitiveness.

Barrow praised the AfDB’s long‑standing partnership with The Gambia, which dates back to 1974 and has resulted in more than $450 million in commitments across key sectors. As of March 2026, the Bank’s active portfolio in the country stands at about $252 million across 17 projects, with transport representing the largest share.

Barrow described the ferry as “a transformative innovation in sustainable maritime transport”, noting that the investment supports The Gambia’s transition towards greener and more resilient infrastructure in line with global climate goals.
