Afreximbank has unveiled a $10 billion emergency response programme aimed at supporting African and Caribbean countries

In response to the economic fallout from the Middle East conflict, the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has unveiled a $10 billion emergency response programme aimed at supporting African and Caribbean countries.

The initiative seeks to cushion nations from shocks including rising energy prices, global trade disruptions, and currency pressures, while ensuring the supply of essential imports such as fuel, food, and medicine.

Dr Lutumba Simão, an Angolan economist, said the programme could be a vital lifeline. “This intervention is timely. African countries are facing simultaneous economic pressures, and this support can help stabilise essential imports and prevent further hardship for citizens,” he explained.

Simão also highlighted the challenge of ensuring the funds reach the most vulnerable sectors efficiently. “The success of such a programme depends on swift implementation, transparency, and coordination with national authorities to target the areas most at risk,” he added.
