The three-day conference in Ghana comes as global demand for critical minerals continues to rise, placing renewed attention on Africa’s role in the clean energy transition and global industrial supply chains.
The event, held under the theme of governance, critical minerals and conflict in Africa, will bring together policymakers, researchers, civil society organisations, mining experts and representatives from mining communities across the continent.
Discussions are expected to focus on how Africa can better manage minerals such as cobalt, lithium, copper, manganese, graphite, rare earths and other resources needed for electric vehicles, batteries, solar panels, wind turbines and digital technologies.
The conference comes amid growing concern that mineral wealth could either support industrialisation and job creation or deepen corruption, violence and inequality if governance systems remain weak.
Africa holds a large share of the world’s critical mineral reserves, but many producing countries continue to export raw materials with limited local processing. This has restricted the continent’s ability to capture greater economic value from its resources.
Delegates are expected to examine how governments can improve transparency, strengthen accountability and promote inclusive governance in the mining sector.
