South Africa’s Channel Africa inaugural Africa Matters Summit has been hailed as a strong starting point for reshaping how the continent approaches financing, with organisers pointing to clear outcomes and practical solutions emerging from the discussions.

Channel Africa Business Manager Dicksy Ngqula said the gathering marked more than just a conversation, describing it as a foundational moment that demonstrated what is possible when African institutions take ownership of their economic future.

Held in partnership with Wits Business School, the one-day summit brought together policymakers, financial experts and researchers to confront long-standing challenges such as fragmented policy frameworks and persistent perceptions of high investment risk across Africa.

Ngqula noted that a key strength of the summit was its focus on solutions rather than rhetoric. He said participants were pushed to move beyond familiar talking points and instead outline practical steps that can be measured over time.

Among the standout discussions were proposals to better utilise financial resources already within the continent, including pension funds and other capital flows, and to rethink how development finance institutions operate. Delegates argued these institutions should take on a more developmental role, rather than mirroring commercial banks with strict lending conditions.

The issue of unity also featured prominently, with calls for African countries to coordinate their positions when engaging global partners, particularly around strategic resources and climate financing.

Ngqula said the decision to broadcast and distribute the summit’s outcomes widely is aimed at ensuring the discussions do not remain confined to conference rooms but reach broader audiences across the continent.

He said the Africa Matters Summit will now become a regular platform, with future editions expected to build on the ideas and commitments set out this week.
