Africa must now push for compensation and restitution for the transatlantic slave trade, political analyst David Matsanga has said, backing Ghana’s renewed call for global accountability.
Ghana is seeking to have the transatlantic slave trade formally recognised as a crime against humanity at the United Nations, as part of a broader effort to advance reparations and historical justice.
Matsanga says the move is long overdue and represents a critical step towards addressing centuries of injustice. He describes the initiative as “timely”, adding that recognition must be followed by concrete action, including compensation for the millions of Africans affected.
The push comes amid growing global debate on reparations, with African leaders and advocacy groups increasingly calling for acknowledgement of the lasting economic and social impact of the slave trade.
Ghana’s position is expected to add momentum to these discussions at the international level, as pressure mounts for formal recognition and meaningful redress.
